چکیده

For the first time, we investigate the X-ray/infrared (IR) correlation for star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at z ∼ 1, using SPIRE submm data from the recently launched Herschel Space Observatory and deep X-ray data from the 2-Ms Chandra Deep Field-North survey. We examine the X-ray/IR correlation in the soft X-ray (SX; 0.5–2 keV) and hard X-ray (HX; 2–10 keV) bands by comparing our z ∼ 1 SPIRE-detected SFGs to equivalently IR-luminous (LIR > 1010 L ) samples in the local/low-redshift Universe. Our results suggest that the X-ray/IR properties of the SPIRE SFGs are on average similar to those of their local counterparts, as we find no evidence for evolution in the LSX/LIR and LHX/LIR ratios with redshift. We note, however, that at all redshifts, both LSX/LIR and LHX/LIR are strongly dependent on IR E-mail: [email protected] C © 2011 The Authors Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society C © 2011 RAS 2240 M. Symeonidis et al. luminosity, with luminous and ultraluminous IR galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs; LIR > 1011 L ) having up to an order of magnitude lower values than normal IR galaxies (LIR < 1011 L ). We derive a LSX–LIR relation and confirm the applicability of an existing LHX–LIR relation for both local and distant LIRGs and ULIRGs, consistent with a scenario where X-ray luminosity is correlated with the star formation rate.

Spitzer Imaging of Strongly Lensed Herschel-selected Dusty Star-forming Galaxies

We present the rest-frame optical spectral energy distribution (SED) and stellar masses of six Herschel-selected gravitationally lensed dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at 1< z< 3. These galaxies were first identified with Herschel/SPIRE imaging data from the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) and the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES). The targets...

An infrared–radio simulation of the extragalactic sky: from the Square Kilometer Array to Herschel

To exploit synergies between the Herschel Space Observatory and next generation radio facilities, we have extended the semi-empirical extragalactic radio continuum simulation of Wilman et al. to the midand far-infrared. Here we describe the assignment of infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to the star-forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei, using Spitzer 24, 70 and 160μm and SCUB...

Candidate Gravitationally Lensed Dusty Star-forming Galaxies in the Herschel Wide Area Surveys

We present a list of candidate gravitationally lensed dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) from the HerMES Large Mode Survey and the Herschel Stripe 82 Survey. Together, these partially overlapping surveys cover 372 deg on the sky. After removing local spiral galaxies and known radio-loud blazars, our candidate list of lensed DSFGs is composed of 77 sources with 500 μm flux densities (S500) grea...

Linking the X - ray and infrared properties of star - forming galaxies at z < 1 . 5

We present the most complete study to date of the X-ray emission from star formation in high-redshift (median z= 0.7; z < 1.5), IR-luminous (LIR = 1010–1013 L ) galaxies detected by Herschel’s PACS and SPIRE instruments. For our purpose, we take advantage of the deepest X-ray data to date, the Chandra Deep Fields (North and South). Sources which host AGN are removed from our analysis by means o...

HerMES: Far infrared properties of known AGN in the HerMES fields*

Nuclear and starburst activity are known to often occur concomitantly. Herschel-SPIRE provides sampling of the far-infrared (FIR) spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of type 1 and type 2 AGN, allowing for the separation between the hot dust (torus) and cold dust (starburst) emission. We study large samples of spectroscopically confirmed type 1 and type 2 AGN lying within the Herschel Multi-tie...
